Introduction to the Basics
There is some confusion when trying to write out the Chinese names in English. Today Pinyin is the accepted form used to write Mandarin/Pu Tong Hua in English, however, in the past there were different versions when trying to write Cantonese or Taiwanese in English. As a result there are different spellings trying to depict the same character. Vegetable in pinyin is cai but tsai in Taiwanese and sometimes choy in Cantonese. Likewise naming the hands and techniques also go through this confusion. Qua shu can be called kwak shu, kwok shu or kwak siu and quak siu. Chop shu can be chok shu or choq siu. I try to put both versions down when I know them. To make it more confusing there is a chok shu, upper cutting hand, and chop shu, intercepting blade hand, to use these terms interchangably doesn't really work. Unfortunately most people would not recognize today's standardized pinyin for any of these hands. Here's how different the name of this style is between the old Cantonese way and modern pinyin for Mandarin:
Kwong Sai Jook Lum Tong Long Gee Pai vs Jiāngxi Zhúlín Sēnlín Xiūdàoyuàn Tángláng Jiātíng. Not even close!
NOTE: I talk about the members section in videos here. It is uncut videos from these sessions and years of other moments that are for my students only. There is nothing pay here; it's just a private area I share with my students.
Please be advised that there are training exercises in the videos that are for developing techniques but not what you would do in a real fight. You must differentiate between an exercise and an application. A batter practicing with weights or boxers/basketball players practicing with bungee cables to develop their skills would be equivalent to this. Also, when you practice with someone make sure they are actually trying to hit you. You can see me in the videos tell the attacker to stop giving away the threat; aim at me, hit me(respectfully). You cheat yourself and your partner if you don't make it real. Thank you.
